Avoid stress after your holiday

After a lovely summer holiday filled with various experiences and plenty of free time, it may be a radical change to throw yourself out in the sea of tasks, emails, meetings and deadlines. And for some, such a relaxing summer holiday can lead to increased stress sensitivity which, after the end of the holiday, triggers the development of stress symptoms if not taken care of.​

"We are seeing a growing group of people developing stress symptoms these months and, paradoxically, it could be that your relaxing summer holiday might be causing you stress in the autumn," says chief psychologist at SOS International Robert Jonasen, and continues:

"For most people, the summer holiday offers an opportunity to recover and recharge, and through relaxation our stress preparedness, which is healthy and good, is scaled back. We rebuild our power and mental strength and our mindset changes. But when faced with stringent work-related requirements, our recovery can disappear in record time, and then the symptoms of stress begin to build up,” explains Robert Jonasen.

Take it seriously before it is too late
Employees under pressure will often try to work through the pressure and stress symptoms by spending more time on their tasks. Robert Jonasen says: "As psychologists, we hear, for example, that everyday life after a holiday gets quickly dimmed by a feeling of pressure, difficult choices and extra long work days in order to regain one's sense of control.” However, longer work days mean increased load and less recovery. Instead, the chief psychologist recommends carrying out a number of activities that can make the pressure tolerable.

This is how you make your working day less stressful
Here you will find advice by SOS International's chief psychologist on how to deal with stress at work. Follow the ones that are right for you and your work:

  • Start your day early if you can - a few uninterrupted hours can ensure a calm start of your day.
  • Spend extra time going over your work schedule and be realistic in your planning.
  • Prioritise your tasks from the start of the day by order of importance and set time for each of them.
  • Create good email hygiene. Set aside time to check emails and close the program during the remaining working hours.
  • Separate your working life from your private life. Only check your private mobile phone at fixed times during the day.
  • Take breaks regularly if you can do so. A ten-minute break gives you a sense of calm and can even make you more efficient.
  • Set aside time for movement, exercise, nature, cinema etc. during your time off).
  • Take note of the activities that can make you relax after work and prioritise them.
  • Set a time for going to bed. Sleep is the single most important factor for recovery.
  • Start planning your next holiday or extended weekend already now so that you know when you will have time to recharge and recover next.
