The world is changing and countries and travel destinations that have ordinarily been considered safe are not necessarily safe any longer. Consequently, many companies are potentially exposed to security risks and threats when operating abroad, but also at home.

This increased risk level calls for increased demands for integrated medical and security assistance. However, handling security risks are often complex and demanding and all companies must address their Duty of Care responsibilities and discuss ethical, moral and legal concerns to secure the company, the employee and the employee's family if exposed to a security or crisis situation. How are countries and regions rated and what does it mean to me?

Behind each risk rating is a thorough analysis process including gathering of data and information from various sources and processing of same.

In the analysis phase the following topics are especially in focus: Crime, Terrorism, Conflict, Political, Kidnap and Infrastructure. 

After having rated each category it accumulates into an overall risk rating which can be low, medium or high.

Risk levels

Low risk
There are no known and/or significant security threats. General sound precautions are still advised.

For example: Denmark, Spain, United Kingdom.

Medium risk
There are known security threats in the country but they are not considered to be significant and/or widespread. Enhanced precautions and awareness is advised.

For example: Chile, Thailand and Albania.


High risk 
There are known and significant security threats in the country. Travellers should be extra vigilant and ensure an appropriate security set-up.


For example: Libya, Afghanistan and Syria.

To the employees 

Good advice for a safe business trip or overseas posting


  • Familiarise yourself with the risk level of your destination.
  • Familiarise yourself with company procedures in the event that you require assistance. Who do you call? 
  • Be aware that you are not covered by your private travel insurance but your employer’s company insurance. Familiarise yourself with the type of assistance for which you are eligible.
  • Make copies of passport, driver’s licence and insurance card.
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities and respect local religion, local customs and traditions.
  • Act prudently when using public transport (e.g. keep track of your valuables).
  • Act prudently and be aware of the risks when using free WIFI (others may be able to see what you are doing, etc.?).
  • Use a safety deposit box when possible (although it is not 100% secure).
  • When you arrive at your accommodation, familiarise yourself with the location of emergency exits and fire-fighting equipment.

To the company 

This is how to keep your employees safe on business trips or overseas postings

  • Make sure you know the whereabouts of your employees when they are on business trips.
  • Inform the travelling employees of where they may find relevant information about their journey.
  • Remember that you are responsible for preparing your travelling employees for carrying out their work. If they feel safe, they are able to focus on work.
  • Ensure that you are able to communicate with the travelling employees in the event of serious incidents abroad.
  • Check that appropriate insurance cover has been taken out.
  • Be aware who does what within your company, if a traveller is affected by a crisis.
  • Have a system in place, which allows the next of kin of travelling employees to be registered, so that you may contact then if necessary.
  • It may be a good idea to set up an agreement with a supplier who is able to assist both before, during and after a serious incident.
  • Be ready to handle any after-effects suffered by the employees following a severe incident.
