Put safety in the driver's seat in the winter cold
Winter is challenging for drivers with icy and snow-covered roads, snowfall and poor visibility. Get our best advice for driving safely through the dark season.
When was the last time the car battery was replaced, can it withstand severe frost? Does the car have a spare tire or tire repair kit? Are the windshield wipers in good condition and the washer fluid filled? Are the car's winter tires in good condition?
Most Nordic drivers are hardy and well-accustomed to driving in freezing temperatures and darkness. But if you want to drive safely in the winter months, SOS International has a number of good tips for optimising your winter driving.
- Winter driving is more challenging and insidious. It is important to take it easy and keep an eye on the weather forecast along the way, says Ville Saarimaa, Network Manager at SOS International, Finland.
In winter, the car is also often exposed to moisture and cold. This affects the battery life, so EV owners need to pay special attention. The range between charges may decrease and the vehicle may need to be charged more frequently.
New cars sometimes lack spare tires. Do you know what to do if your car has a flat tire? Can you use a tire repair kit? By preparing in advance, you can avoid difficult situations on the road.
Remember the following before and during driving in winter:
- Check the winter tyres. Winter tyres must have a tread depth of at least 3 mm
- Also, be sure to check the tire pressure and tire bolt fastening after changing tires
- Check your car's lights
- Top up washer fluid and engine oil
- Have a spare wheel or repair kit in the car
- Remove snow from the car and windows
- Keep a safe distance and adapt your speed to the conditions
- Plan your route and allow enough time for the drive
- Have the number for the roadside assistance ready and keep your phone charged
- Bring warm clothes
