Medical Care Abroad Just Got Easier
SOS International enhances travellers’ access to medical help abroad through a new digital feature and communication channel.
In preparation for the busy summer travel season, SOS International has introduced new digital tools to help travellers access medical care more easily – without compromising the high level of quality that defines SOS International.
“Our digital services are built on what we’re already known for: expertise, experience, and quality. By harnessing the latest technology, we’re making it even easier and safer for travellers to receive medical care abroad,” says Karin Tranberg, Executive Vice President of Travelcare at SOS International.
Helping travellers find recommended clinics
Ahead of the summer peak, SOS International has focused on addressing two common challenges experienced by travellers:
- Many travellers reach out to the alarm centre only after seeking local treatment.
- The quality of care abroad does not always meet Nordic standards.
A closed file review shows that 60% of travellers contact SOS International’s alarm centre only after they’ve already received treatment. This increases the risk of ending up at a clinic that SOS International would not recommend.
“We have an extensive network of trusted medical providers. That’s why we’ve now integrated a map into our digital platform that allows travellers to locate nearby clinics. It also highlights which providers are recommended by SOS International,” says Karin Tranberg.
Travellers are often referred to clinics or hospitals by hotel staff or taxi drivers, who may have commercial ties to specific providers. The new “Find Medical Facility” function aims to prevent travellers from visiting clinics with a higher risk of overtreatment, medical errors, or inflated prices.
The map is available at the frontpage of sos.eu under the section “Find Medical Facility”.
Expanding communication options with video consultations
A pilot project involving video consultations has provided valuable insights into how video calls can add real value for both the traveller and the insurance provider in selected cases.
As a result, SOS International is now expanding its range of communication channels to include video consultations – offering new ways to assist travellers wherever they are, both geographically and digitally.
We’ve launched video consultations in Norway and Denmark – and we’re preparing to expand the service to additional markets.
Digital contact is not always the best solution
However, the pilot also revealed that direct access to video consultations with a doctor is not always the most appropriate solution. In many cases, a physical visit to a local clinic or a conversation with a case handler about insurance coverage is still necessary.
To address this, SOS International now offers video consultations only when an initial screening determines it’s relevant. This screening takes into account the diagnosis, destination, and other contextual factors to ensure the video consultation provides genuine value.
“It’s important that we only offer video consultations when it makes sense. That way, we ensure travellers receive the most appropriate care for their situation. We’re already seeing cases where travellers avoid a local doctor visit altogether after speaking with one of our experienced doctors,” says Karin Tranberg.
