One in Three Breakdowns Abroad Happen Within the First 72 Hours

According to new statistics from SOS International (Sweden), one in three vehicle breakdowns abroad occur within the first 72 hours of the journey. This means that many policyholders encounter problems even before they’ve had a chance to enjoy their holiday.

Over the past five years, the highest number of breakdowns has occurred in Germany – a country most travellers pass through en route to southern Europe. These incidents often cluster along the major motorways.

Breakdowns are particularly common just after crossing the Danish border and before reaching Hanover – especially in the regions of Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein.

“For many travellers, a road trip represents freedom. But we see that those who haven’t properly prepared their car or packed carefully often run into trouble early in the journey,” says Kristin Charlieson, specialist at SOS International, Sweden.

Prevention Reduces Claims and Costs

Encouraging policyholders to service their vehicles, check tyres and brakes, and pack smartly can be key – not only to road safety but also to reducing the number of breakdowns and subsequent claims.

It’s equally important to inform customers about their insurance cover and how to access assistance – so they know what to expect in case of a breakdown.

The Right Cover Helps – But the Right Expectations Help Even More

“With the right insurance – including hire car cover – we can quickly help the customer get back on the road. But when key elements are missing, difficult decisions and customer dissatisfaction often follow. The better prepared the traveller is, the smoother the assistance will be,” says Kristin Charlieson.

At SOS International, we see great potential for continued collaboration with our insurance partners when it comes to customer communication. We have resources available to support your claims teams, customer service and communications department – and we welcome your enquiries.
